International project RETOUR

History has both its bright and dark sides. However, none of them should be forgotten. International project RETOUR – Remember to understand each other focuses on the modern history of individual participating countries. At the beginning of August, all participants met in the Czech Republic, where the organizers presented issues of the 1950s.

In the first week of August, representatives from Poland, Bulgaria, Greece, Germany and France met in Jáchymov. The small Ore Mountains town has a very rich history. It is still marked by uranium mining and the horrors that the communist regime committed here in the 1950s. The Association Political prisoners.eu together with the Journalist Incubator, who organized the Czech workshop, decided to bring this topic closer to their guests.

Over the course of three days, the group completed the educational trail Jáchymov’s hell during which they looked at the places where labor camps were built in the mentioned period, learned more about the fate of political prisoners who worked in uranium mines… The organizers tried to bring life in Jáchymovsko closer to foreign visitors. That is why a meeting with local residents was part of the program.

There are not many places left in Jáchymov that would resemble dark historical periods. One of them is the so-called “Řetízkárna”. This is the building of the former Muggle changing room, which the Political prisoners.eu is currently trying to buy. The foreign visitors met with the architects Tereza Kabelková and Vít Jurica, who are working on the project to save the “Řetízkárna”. They informed them about the intentions of the association. The result of this program was a debate full of new ideas and topics from the foreign participants.

The project has received foreign support, and perhaps the next such meeting will take place in the new community center, in which the “Řetízkárna” should be transformed!
